Bathroom Waterproofing Guide
Tile is a wear surface. The waterproofing behind and beneath it is what actually keeps water where it belongs — and it is the part of a bathroom you can never inspect again once tile is set.

Why tile and grout are not waterproof
Grout is cementitious and porous. Water passes through it and reaches whatever is behind the tile. That is normal and expected; showers are designed around it. The job of the waterproofing assembly is to catch that moisture and direct it back to the drain.
This is why a shower that looks perfect can still fail. If the assembly behind the tile is incomplete, incompatible or improperly detailed, moisture reaches framing and subfloor, and the first visible symptom often appears far from the actual failure.
Shower pans and slope
The floor of a shower must fall consistently toward the drain across its entire area. That slope can be created with a mortar bed built on site or with a manufactured pre-sloped foam pan. Both work; what matters is consistency and that no flat or reverse-sloped areas remain.
Slope has to continue under a bench and out through the entry when there is no curb. Curbless designs need the slope built into the framing or subfloor, which is why they are a structural decision made early rather than a finish decision made late.
Linear drains simplify curbless designs because the floor can pitch in one direction rather than in four planes toward a center point.
Membranes and wall systems

Seams, corners and penetrations
Failures concentrate where planes change and where something passes through the assembly. Inside corners, curb corners, bench-to-wall transitions and niche perimeters all need banding or preformed corners rather than a simple overlap.
Penetrations — the mixing valve, shower arm, body sprays, and any fastener that goes through the membrane — get sealed with the products the membrane manufacturer specifies. A single unsealed penetration is enough to matter.
Niches and benches deserve particular care because they add multiple corners in the wettest part of the shower. Sloping a niche shelf slightly forward and wrapping it as part of the wall assembly keeps water moving out rather than sitting.
Drains, movement joints and moisture management
The drain assembly must connect properly to the membrane — clamping ring, bonding flange or manufacturer-specific connection depending on the system. This joint is where the waterproofing terminates, so it has to be right.
Movement joints at perimeters and changes of plane use flexible sealant instead of grout, because buildings move and rigid grout in a moving joint cracks. This is why the wall-to-floor line in a shower is caulked, not grouted.
Beyond the shower, moisture management means adequate exhaust ventilation, moisture-tolerant substrates in splash zones and finishes that dry rather than hold water.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can waterproofing be added to an existing shower without removing tile?
No. The assembly lives behind the tile, so correcting it means rebuilding the wet area. Surface sealers can slow water absorption through grout but they are not a substitute for waterproofing.
Is a mortar bed pan better than a foam pan kit?
Both perform well when installed correctly. Mortar beds allow custom shapes and sizes; foam kits offer consistent factory slope and faster installation. The choice usually follows the shower's geometry.
Do niches cause leaks?
Not inherently. They add corners, so they raise the importance of correct detailing. A properly wrapped and sloped niche performs as well as the surrounding wall.
How long does waterproofing need to cure?
It depends on the product and on temperature and humidity. Manufacturers specify cure times before tile can be set, and those windows are not worth compressing.
